Art of Defiance

I can't remember what my last "most favorited" deviation was but it's Chestnut Glow now. The prose is my first foray into horror and macabre but like what a reader had commented on its page, it reads more like a psychological study. My characters are still believable and the twist was superbly written, readers agree. Chestnut Glow has 28 comments and 8 favorites as of press time. It also has 69 views.

"I couldn't quite tell where the story was going until it got there - the mark of an excellent twist. Well done. And what man has not felt that murderous urge rise up in him at the pain of rejection, if only for a split-second, before reason, ethics, and social conditioning shove it back down?" FakeKraid, a deviant like myself, commented.

"Yeah, the twist was the best part. The suspense and horror elements were weaker. It reads more like a psychological study than a horror story. Not to say that it's boring or poorly written - it isn't either of those. The acumen with which you describe the man's initial impressions of Anne, and the process by which infatuation turns to love is quite clear." He adds. "But there's no sense of uneasiness."

That means I still have a long way to go. Still, the story depended on the twist and it delivered well, even though I would have wanted people to get scared. Just keep on practicing, dodo head. Keep on writing and we'll get there, no matter how many drafts I have to write.

Speaking of deviantART, Writer's Workshop has been helping me greatly with my writing. The recently concluded YOU Workshop, hosted by the ever generous `lovetodeviate, had me learning new things including style and meter and even writing at my own pace. My entry here was Being the Bigger Man and it came out weird, mostly because it was rushed. I could come up with lots of excuses, like it was the holidays and I was feeling lazy the whole time, but it wouldn't be justified. A good and real writer, or a really good writer, is always eager to learn and improve.

Writing is a craft where no one ever becomes a master, a famed writer whose name I can't remember once said.
