Ignorance Can't Save You

People fear what they don't understand.

The first time I heard that was on Marvel's X-Men, the animated show, spoken by Professor Xavier, the most powerful telepath in the world and leader of the group of mutants. His rival and bestfriend, Magneto, also had powerful words to say on that show:

The brave are always the first to die.

I've always lived by the mantra, "What doesn't kill you, will only make you stronger". Because of that, I welcome any and all stress as challenges to my intellect. It's a defense mechanism, a friend would say. Another would tell me that it makes me who I am. Either way, it only means I love conflict and I'm always determined to solve them like puzzles. The previous statement just made me think about Dr. Gregory House. Too much of a good thing can be bad.

I'm not the only one who adopts this kind of strategy against problems. But there are other forms of preventive measures, rather defensive in most cases as there are instances wherein we fail to foresee the impending consequences that simple stretching of the rules can complicate. One, in particular, is ignoring the whole thing. Ignorance makes me chuckle.

People are afraid of the unknown, that much is true. When their fears are put into reality, however, the fear of uncertainty makes them squeamish and instead of getting their gun from under their pillow, they'd rather call the police and hide in the basement. Okay, that didn't sound like how I wanted it to sound but the point is being ignorant solves nothing.

What if the phone lines were dead? What if the murderer has ties to the police? What if he is in fact the police?

Flashbacks of that cop movie with Samuel Jackson made me cringe. Conspiracy theories can be a little offputting at times.

Ignorance can only go as far as give you an ideal sanctuary but it can not beat the reality that a man behind you is about to hit you with your grandmother's urn. Prepare for pain? In the first place, you should have locked the window but then again, you can't get fresh air with locking yourself up like some psychopath in a mental institution.

Bottom line is, don't be ignorant of pain. It's fun, you know. Sometimes, you need to feel the bruise in order to cure it. You can't run away from everything forever.

And now this is the part where I stab you.
